Alberta Pesticide Survey Report

The Alberta Pesticide Survey Report details a public opinion poll conducted in August 2016. A majority of respondents expressed concern that pesticides used on lawns and gardens pose threats to children (66%), pets (68%), and the general environment (50%). Consequently, 62% of those surveyed supported a law to phase out the use and sale of all but the safest pesticides for lawns and gardens in Alberta, excluding agriculture, forestry, and mosquito control.

• A majority of surveyed Albertans perceive pesticides used on lawns and gardens as threats to health and the environment: 68% believe they pose a health threat to pets, 66% believe they pose a health threat to children, and 50% believe they pose a threat to the general environment, including air, soil, water, and wildlife.
• 62% of respondents support a law in Alberta to phase out the sale and use of all but the safest pesticides for lawns and gardens, provided the law does not apply to forestry, agriculture, or mosquito control. Only 33% of respondents oppose such a law.
• Support for both the environmental risks of pesticides and the proposed phase-out legislation was highest among the youngest demographic surveyed (18-34 years of age), with 58% agreeing on environmental threats and 70% supporting the legislation.
