Alberta Pesticide Survey Report

The Alberta Pesticide Survey Report presents findings from an August 2016 telephone survey of 1,000 Alberta residents regarding the perceived risks of pesticides used on lawns and gardens and support for a provincial phase-out law.

• Among surveyed Alberta residents, 50% agreed that pesticides used on lawns and gardens in their community threaten the environment, including air, soil, water quality, and wildlife. This view was most common among females (57%) and individuals aged 18-34 (58%), while 24% of respondents disagreed and 24% remained neutral.
• A majority of respondents perceived pesticides on lawns and gardens as health threats to children and pets, with agreement rates of 66% and 68% respectively. For the threat to children, 17% disagreed and 14% were neutral; for the threat to pets, 18% disagreed and 11% were neutral.
• A 62% majority of surveyed Albertans support a law to phase out the use and sale of all but the safest pesticides for lawns and gardens in Alberta, excluding agriculture, forestry, and mosquito control. Support was highest among residents aged 18-34 at 70%, while 33% of total respondents opposed the law and 5% were undecided.
