A CASE STUDY PROFILE ON BIOGAS PRODUCTION FOR FOREST CONSERVATION IN NIGERIA

This document provides three case studies on climate adaptation in Nigeria. In Ogun state, communities use agricultural waste for biogas to reduce reliance on fuelwood and protect forests. In Lagos state, fish farmers employ deeper boreholes and specialized pond enclosures to maintain aquaculture productivity. In Anambra state, residents use erosion-resistant trees and sandbags to mitigate gully erosion. All three regions report challenges regarding limited financial services and insufficient government support.

• In Owode Town, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun state, rural communities are using organic waste and agricultural biomass residues—such as sun-dried seed and palm kernel during rainy seasons—to produce biogas and substitute for fuelwood. These actions aim to conserve depleted forest resources, restore biodiversity, and address health issues caused by fuelwood use, aligning with Nigeria's Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) and updated NDCs.
• Fish farmers in Abesan and Shagari Estates in Lagos State have implemented adaptive strategies to counter climate change impacts on aquaculture. These include drilling deeper water boreholes for constant water access, using storage tanks for aeration and water quality monitoring, and employing white and black plastic sheets to enclose ponds for hatchlings and fingerlings.
• In Abatete and other communities within Anambra state, residents are combating gully erosion and land degradation through nature-based and manual interventions. Strategies include planting erosion-resistant trees, placing sandbags (sometimes filled with periwinkle and palm kernel shells) at hotspots, and using wood logs, twigs, and high ridges/mounds to control soil erosion.
