Building Resilience of Communities to Climate Impacts: Progress, Opportunities and Constraints to Delivering Locally-Led Adaptation in Ghana

The analysis finds that while Ghanaian communities actively employ local knowledge for climate-smart agriculture and waste management, their efforts are hindered by limited access to financial resources, technical support, and national policy guidelines. It argues that Ghana's national adaptation goals, including those in its NDCs, can be better achieved by delegating authority and funding to local actors and integrating indigenous practices into national strategies.

• Climate change impacts, including erratic rainfall, droughts, and sea-level rise, are negatively affecting health, food security, and livelihoods across Ghana, particularly impacting landscapes and forest resources.
• Local communities in Ghana are proactively using indigenous knowledge to implement adaptation measures such as climate-smart agriculture, community-led irrigation, waste recycling, and home elevation.
