STORIES OF SUCCESS

The report details WWF-South Africa's Graduate Development Programme, which provides structured internships for graduates and matriculants to transition into the environmental sector. Between 2011 and 2013, the programme created 55 internship opportunities, utilizing a network of mentors and partner organisations to enhance professional capacity in areas such as marine resource management, freshwater conservation, and environmental law. It also highlights the 'Groen Sebenza' initiative, a partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) to create jobs for ecosystems management.

• Between 2011 and 2013, the Graduate Development Programme created 55 internship opportunities for a total of 30 Masters, 20 first degree and Honours graduates, and 5 matriculants.
• The programme achieved a 100% retention rate in the environmental sector for graduates recruited between 2011 and 2012.
• The programme utilizes a structured induction process including workshops on the South African environmental and socio-economic policy framework and workplace competences such as ethics and communications.
• WWF-South Africa partnered with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) for the 'Groen Sebenza' programme, which aims to place 800 youth (500 graduates and 300 matriculants) in the biodiversity sector.
• In 2013, WWF-SA supported 25 youth placements through Groen Sebenza, with 22 placed in partner organisations and 3 internally.
• The programme relies on a Mentor’s Network to share best practices and support the development of interns across WWF-SA and 20 partner organisations.
