STORIES OF SUCCESS

The 2013 report 'STORIES OF SUCCESS' describes WWF-South Africa’s Graduate Development Programme, an internship initiative designed to transition new graduates into professional roles within the environmental sector. The programme provides structured induction, mentorship, and networking opportunities to develop a cadre of creative environmental leaders.

• Since its formal inception in 2011, the Graduate Development Programme has supported 55 individuals in entering the environmental workforce, consisting of 30 Masters graduates, 20 first degree and Honours graduates, and 5 matriculants.
• The programme achieves a high retention rate within the sector; 100% of graduates recruited between 2011 and 2012 remained in the environmental sector.
• The internship structure includes a structured induction, placement with dedicated mentors, and workshops covering the South African environmental and socio-economic policy framework as well as workplace competences like ethics and communications.
• The programme has expanded its reach through partnerships, hosting 43 interns in 2013 across WWF-SA and 20 partner organisations.
• The Groen Sebenza initiative, funded by the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund via the DBSA and managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), aims to place 800 youth (500 graduates and 300 matriculants) in the biodiversity sector. In 2013, WWF-SA supported 25 of these placements, with 22 placed in partner organisations and 3 internally.
• The programme is supported by a Mentor’s Network where mentors share best practices and collectively address challenges to support the development of the interns.
• Funding for the programme has been provided by the Hoffmann Foundation, Sanlam Leaders for Living Waters, and the WWF Nedbank Green Trust.
