ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY QUESTION FRAMEWORK

The Environmental Sustainability Question Framework is a guide produced by WWF South Africa and the Investment Solutions Partnership. It provides a structured questionnaire for companies to assess and report on their environmental governance, resource consumption, waste management, and energy emissions.

• The framework evaluates environmental governance by asking companies if they have an Environmental Policy framework, whether that framework is governed at the board level, and if they produce audited Environmental Sustainability reports.
• The document outlines specific metrics for water management, requiring companies to report total water consumption in cubic meters (m3) and relative to revenue (m3/Co R million revenue), as well as the percentages of water recycled/re-used and discharged into marine or freshwater bodies.
• The framework assesses supply chain and waste management through questions on the local sourcing of raw materials, traceability procedures, and the generation, transport, or storage of hazardous or toxic waste, including nuclear and radioactive materials.
• Energy and emissions tracking are focused on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion and processing (measured in Mtons CO2-e), total energy consumption in MWh, and the percentage of energy sourced from renewable technologies such as solar, wind, and biomass.
• The framework includes a specialized section for the mining and energy industry, requesting the percentage of revenue derived from fossil fuels, coal, and oil and gas, as well as inquiries regarding acid mine drainage (AMD) and decommissioning plans for mines.
