ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY QUESTION FRAMEWORK

The Environmental Sustainability Question Framework is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate corporate environmental impact. It collects data on governance, water management, supply chain traceability, waste and pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the adoption of renewable energy. It includes a specialized section for mining and energy companies to track fossil fuel revenue and mine decommissioning plans.

• The framework assesses environmental governance by asking if a company has an Environmental Policy framework governed at the board level and whether it produces audited Environmental Sustainability reports.
• Water management is evaluated through strategic commitments, total consumption measurements (in m3 and m3/Co R million revenue), tracking of year-on-year changes, and the percentages of water recycled or discharged into freshwater or marine bodies.
• The tool monitors energy and emissions by requesting data on energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in Mtons CO2-e, total energy consumption in MWh, and the percentage of energy sourced from renewable forms or green technologies such as wind, solar, and biomass.
• For companies in the mining and energy sector, the framework specifically investigates the percentage of revenue derived from fossil fuels, coal, and oil and gas, as well as the presence of acid mine drainage (AMD) and decommissioning plans.
• Supply chain and waste metrics include the portion of raw materials sourced locally, traceability procedures, the consumption of cardboard, plastics, wood, and paper, and the management of hazardous or toxic waste.
