This fact sheet by WWF South Africa describes the establishment and purpose of Small-Scale Fishing Zones (SSFZs) in South Africa. • SSFZs are implemented through a co-management framework involving small-scale fishers, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and other stakeholders. This approach allows fishers to participate in local decision-making and resource management, integrating local knowledge with scientific data.
• The establishment of SSFZs can contribute to the '30x30' target of the Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to protect 30% of the world's land and oceans. SSFZs have the potential to be recognized as Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), balancing human livelihoods with biodiversity conservation.
