Illustrative People’s Energy Plan (IPEP)

The Illustrative People’s Energy Plan (IPEP), developed by WWF South Africa and the Energy Systems Research Group (ESRG) at the University of Cape Town, serves as a model for a transparent, climate-friendly energy plan for South Africa. It aims to show how the country can fulfill climate commitments while maintaining affordable and reliable energy, filling a gap left by the absence of a national Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) for over twenty years.

• South Africa has lacked an Integrated Energy Plan (IEP)—the primary document for guiding the future use of coal, gas, nuclear, and renewable energy—for more than twenty years, although a new draft is anticipated early next year.
• The Illustrative People’s Energy Plan (IPEP) was created by WWF South Africa and the Energy Systems Research Group (ESRG) at the University of Cape Town, with financial support from the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, to demonstrate a transparent, nature- and climate-friendly approach to energy planning that ensures reliability and affordability.
