Outcome 2 - Improved freshwater quality and quantity

WWF South Africa collaborated with government, business, and civil society to improve freshwater quality and quantity through strategic water source area partnerships. Key initiatives included hiring full-time coordinators for the uMhlathuze and uMkhomazi partnerships, implementing real-time monitoring tools, and protecting 43 natural springs in the uMzimvubu Catchment Partnership. These efforts were supported by funding from Mondi, Sappi, Nedbank, and Sanlam.

• WWF South Africa utilized community-public-private partnerships (CPPPs) to strengthen water stewardship in strategic water source areas, specifically employing full-time coordinators for the uMhlathuze Water Stewardship Partnership (UWASP) and the uMkhomazi Catchment Working Group (UCWG) in KwaZulu-Natal through funding from Mondi and Sappi.
• Corporate funding enabled specific catchment interventions: Mondi supported a feasibility study on grey-green infrastructure for UWASP and the creation of the Inwards and Flowtracker monitoring tools; Sappi funded invasive alien plant clearing, youth enterprises, rangeland management, and biochar production for UCWG.
• Through the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, the uMzimvubu Catchment Partnership (UCP) has protected 43 natural springs to improve rural water access and investigated biodegradable nappy linings to reduce waterway pollution, providing a proof-of-concept for spring protection as a cost-effective long-term water security method.
