Outcome 2 - Improved freshwater quality and quantity

A report by WWF South Africa detailing efforts between 2020 and 2025 to secure water supply through community-public-private partnerships (CPPPs) and corporate funding in strategic water source areas.

• Between 2020 and 2025, WWF utilized community-public-private partnerships (CPPPs) to strengthen water stewardship in strategic water source areas. In KwaZulu-Natal, funding from Mondi and Sappi allowed for the hiring of full-time coordinators for the uMhlathuze Water Stewardship Partnership (UWASP) and the uMkhomazi Catchment Working Group (UCWG), respectively. This capacity enabled the provision of science-based technical advice and the development of collective strategies. Additionally, Mondi supported the creation of two near real-time monitoring tools for water governance called Inwards and Flowtracker.
• Corporate funding has enabled specific catchment interventions: in 2024, Mondi funded a feasibility study on grey-green infrastructure for UWASP, while Sappi supported UCWG in clearing invasive alien plants, developing youth enterprises, improving rangeland management, and creating biochar from cleared biomass. Sappi also funded monitoring and evaluation, leading to a renewal of its water stewardship agreement with WWF until 2027.
• Since 2017, the WWF Nedbank Green Trust has supported the uMzimvubu Catchment Partnership (UCP) in activities including the removal of invasive alien species and the protection of 43 natural springs to improve rural water access. These efforts in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area served as a proof-of-concept for the cost-effectiveness of spring protection, a finding documented in a joint policy brief by WWF and Lima Rural Development Foundation.
