NEW SPECIES DISCOVERIES IN THE GREATER MEKONG
Summary
In 2023, 234 new species of vascular plants and vertebrate animals were discovered in the Greater Mekong region, which includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. These discoveries, which bring the total since 1997 to 3,624, underscore the region's status as a biodiversity hotspot and the critical role of natural history museums and citizen science in taxonomic research. However, many of these species, such as the critically endangered Truongsonia lecongkietii palm and the Chiloschista quangdangii orchid, face immediate threats from habitat destruction, illegal trade, and climate change.
Key insights
- A total of 234 new species of vascular plants and vertebrate animals were discovered in the Greater Mekong region in 2023, bringing the total number of species described in the region since 1997 to 3,624.
- The discovery of the Fansipan shrew mole (Uropsilus fansipanensis) in northwestern Viet Nam marks the southernmost point of the range for the shrew mole subfamily.
- The discovery of the palm species Truongsonia lecongkietii in Viet Nam led to the creation of a new genus (Truongsonia) and tribe (Truongsonieae) because it has no close relations in Asia and is a sister to the West African genus Podococcus.
- Citizen science played a critical role in the discovery of the begonia species B. kayinensis in Myanmar, utilizing social media and the Native Species Conservation and Identification (NSCI) initiative to connect researchers with local enthusiasts.
- Karst landscapes in Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam are identified as unique islands of biodiversity that foster high levels of endemic species, but approximately 99% of these landscapes lack legal protection.
- The discovery of the Ngoc Linh crocodile newt (Tylototriton ngoclinhensis) in Viet Nam sets an elevational record for the genus in the country, occurring at altitudes between 1,800m and 2,300m.
- Natural history museum collections are essential for describing new species, as evidenced by the Dalat Gymnure (Hylomys macarong), which was formally described from a specimen housed in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History since the 1960s.
- Several newly discovered species are already classified as Critically Endangered due to extremely restricted ranges and habitat loss, including the orchid Chiloschista quangdangii and the shrub Balantines vietnamica.
