Reaching Out Through Community Radio: Information and knowledge sharing about linear infrastructure development and natural resource safeguarding
Summary
The ALIGN project, supported by USAID, collaborated with Radio Sagarmatha to produce a four-episode radio series titled "Digo Bikash ra Prakritik Shrot ko Samrakshyan" (Sustainable Development and Natural Resource safeguarding). The series aimed to educate the public and stakeholders on the impacts of linear infrastructure (LI)—such as roads and power lines—on biodiversity and the implementation of mitigation measures. Broadcast across seven provinces in Nepal, the program reached an estimated 5.5 million people. The episodes featured experts from government bodies, including the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and the Department of Roads, as well as representatives from WWF-Nepal and the Asian Development Bank. A key focus was the dissemination of the government of Nepal's Wildlife-Friendly Infrastructure Construction Directives 2022, which seek to reduce wildlife accidents and conflicts.
Key insights
- The radio program series reached a total tentative audience of 5.5 million people across Nepal's seven provinces, with the highest reach in Koshi Province via Saptakoshi FM (3.5 million).
- The series addressed the lack of public and stakeholder knowledge regarding natural resource safeguards in linear infrastructure (LI) development, which is described as a "novel concept in Nepal".
- The program provided specific information on the Wildlife-Friendly Infrastructure Construction Directives 2022, a government of Nepal initiative designed to minimize adverse impacts on wildlife habitats and reduce accidents and conflicts.
- Experts highlighted that while linear infrastructure is essential for services like electricity and transportation, its linear structure creates significant threats to ecosystems, necessitating a balance between development and biodiversity preservation.
