Expanding nesting opportunities for hyacinth macaws in the Paraguayan Cerrado

The project addressed threats to hyacinth macaws in the Estancia Arrecife Natural Reserve, including climate-exacerbated wildfires and poaching. Interventions included educational campaigns involving 187 participants and the installation of 20 artificial nest boxes and the repair of three natural nest trees. These efforts resulted in the first recorded wild occupation of a nest box by a hyacinth macaw in Paraguay, alongside the occupation of five natural cavities by hyacinth and scarlet macaws.

• Climate change is exacerbating destructive wildfires in the Cerrado, which disrupts the availability of large trees required for hyacinth macaw breeding and threatens their long-term survival.
• Conservation efforts in the Estancia Arrecife Natural Reserve, including the installation of 20 nest boxes and the repair of three natural nest trees, led to the first recorded wild occupation of a hyacinth macaw in a nest box in Paraguay.
• The project integrated community and government engagement, involving 172 students, six government workers, and nine park rangers in education campaigns targeting poaching, illegal trafficking, and habitat destruction.
