Federal Climate Package Faces Setback in US Senate

The World Resources Institute warns that the potential failure of a U.S. Senate reconciliation package containing clean energy investments would be a 'devastating setback' to the United States' goal of halving emissions by 2030. The statement argues that clean energy measures would save households $500 annually and are essential for economic growth and climate mitigation.

• U.S. Senator Joe Manchin has indicated he may not support new climate and clean energy spending within a reconciliation package, which would effectively block its passage in the Senate. The package includes provisions for industrial decarbonization, vehicle electrification, and clean energy investments.
• The World Resources Institute asserts that clean energy measures would reduce annual energy bills for American households by $500, contradicting claims that such provisions would increase inflation.
• Failure to pass the budget reconciliation package would jeopardize the United States' commitment to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030, as strong financial investments are deemed essential to meet this timeline.
