WRI’S WATER PROGRAM IN ETHIOPIA

This briefing outlines the World Resources Institute's (WRI) Water Program in Ethiopia, which focuses on managing water risks, promoting nature-based solutions for watershed health, and increasing urban water resilience to support the country's development goals.

• WRI is addressing water insecurity in Ethiopia by collaborating with the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) and the Planning and Development Commission (PDC) to develop models that assess water supply, sectoral demand, and projected water risks based on climate change and growth scenarios.
• To secure long-term water supplies and combat land degradation, WRI is working with the Abbay Basin Development Office in the Tana sub-basin to implement nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and soil and water conservation, and is exploring payment for ecosystem services to reduce sedimentation in hydropower dams.
• WRI is supporting urban water resilience in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa through the Urban Water Resilience in Africa initiative.
