Widespread Demand for the Clean School Bus Program

This fact sheet from the World Resources Institute describes the impact of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program (CSBP), highlighting its role in reducing diesel pollution, providing cost savings to school districts, and stimulating the domestic electric school bus manufacturing industry.

• Electric school buses offer health and financial advantages over diesel-powered buses, which are linked to cancer, asthma, and cognitive development issues. On average, electric school buses save school districts $100,000 in maintenance and fuel costs over the lifetime of a single bus.
• The Clean School Bus Program (CSBP) has seen demand that far exceeded initial funding in its first three rounds. To date, the program has funded over 8,000 electric school buses across 48 states, Washington, DC, four U.S. territories, and 65 Tribal school districts, with more than 2,000 buses already delivered.
• The CSBP is driving a domestic manufacturing boom, with 21 facilities across 13 states supporting thousands of jobs. Major facilities are located in states including Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. It is estimated that every electric vehicle manufacturing job can create three additional jobs in local third-party businesses.
