Energy by the Numbers: VIRGINIA

• In 2006, fossil fuels represented 68% of energy consumption in Virginia, a slight increase from 67% in 1990. This growth was driven by increased demand for natural gas in electricity generation—the state's largest energy-consuming sector—and petroleum for industry and transportation.
• Fossil fuels are the primary source for electricity generation in Virginia, accounting for approximately 78% of the total. The main sources of electricity are nuclear power and coal.
• Between 1990 and 2005, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Virginia grew by 15%, which was a slower rate of growth than the average for the United States. This increase was primarily caused by the electric generation and transportation sectors. As of 2005, energy consumption was responsible for approximately 91% of total GHG emissions, mostly from the combustion of coal and petroleum.
