Energy by the Numbers: FLORIDA

• In 2006, fossil fuels represented 80% of energy consumption in Florida, an increase from 78% in 1990. This growth is attributed to higher demand for natural gas for electricity generation and petroleum for transportation. Fossil fuels account for roughly 84% of the state's electricity generation.
• Florida's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions grew by 39% between 1990 and 2005, which was more than double the average growth rate of the United States. These emissions were primarily driven by the transportation and electric generation sectors.
• As of 2005, energy consumption was responsible for approximately 91% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Florida, with the majority of these emissions resulting from the combustion of coal and petroleum.
