A COUNTRY-LED PARTNERSHIP TO RESTORE 20 MILLION HECTARES

This fact sheet describes Initiative 20x20, a partnership of governments, private sector investors, NGOs, and research organizations aimed at restoring degraded lands in Latin America and the Caribbean to improve livelihoods and combat climate change.

• Initiative 20x20 has surpassed its initial goal of restoring 20 million hectares of degraded land, with US$2.4 billion earmarked by private sector impact investors to fund projects on the ground.

Land-use change, forestry, and agriculture account for 49% of emissions in the region, a profile that differs from the developed world, where emissions are typically dominated by industrial emissions and energy use.
• Agriculture and forestry are critical to the region's economy, contributing nearly US$300 billion to the regional GDP and providing up to 50% of rural household income in some countries.
• The initiative employs two primary restoration strategies: creating mosaic landscapes through sustainable agroforestry or silvopasture to improve crop productivity and household income, and restoring forests and wilderness to store carbon and bring back biodiversity.
• The partnership includes over 50 technical and 20 financial partners and aligns with global restoration targets established by the NY Declaration on Forests and the Bonn Challenge.
