This fact sheet introduces the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life Cycle Standards, which expand the existing suite of international accounting tools to allow businesses to measure and report emissions across their entire value chain and product lifecycles.

• The GHG Protocol standards are the most widely used international tools for greenhouse gas accounting; in 2010, over 85 percent of the 2,487 respondents to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) survey utilized the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.
• The Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life Cycle standards were developed over three years through a multi-stakeholder process involving 2,300 participants from 55 countries, 207 technical working group members, and 60 companies that road-tested the standards in 2010.
• The Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard allows companies to account for emissions from 15 categories of upstream and downstream activities. This is critical because scope 3 sources often represent the majority of total corporate emissions; for instance, Kraft Foods found that value chain emissions exceeded 90 percent of its total emissions.
• The Product Life Cycle Standard enables companies to measure greenhouse gases across a product's full life cycle, including raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, storage, use, and disposal, to identify GHG reduction opportunities and improve product design.
