Unidos y Unidas por las Personas Defensoras del Medio Ambiente y del Territorio

This fact sheet describes the STAND Initiative (Unidos y Unidas por las Personas Defensoras del Medio Ambiente y del Territorio), a collaborative effort between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Alliance for Land, Indigenous, and Environmental Defenders (ALLIED) to support environmental and territorial defenders in six countries.

• Environmental and territorial defenders face severe security risks, including criminalization, physical aggression, and murder, particularly in nations reliant on natural resource extraction or large-scale infrastructure. These attacks are often driven by corruption, inefficient enforcement of environmental laws, and a lack of recognition of defenders' rights by the private sector and states.
• The STAND Initiative aims to strengthen prevention strategies for defenders, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities in areas with weak governance. It also supports civil society organizations whose members have faced government-sanctioned judicial abuse, threats, and harassment.
• The strategy of the STAND Initiative is based on three main pillars: capacity building to improve advocacy and legal accountability skills (including psychosocial and security support), the Defender Seed Grant Fund (DSGF) providing small grants for evidence-based advocacy, and the creation of collaborative alliances to strengthen local solidarity networks and increase participation in environmental governance.
