Juntos pelos Defensores Ambientais

The Standing Together for Environmental Defenders (STAND) initiative, led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Alliance for Land, Indigenous, and Environmental Defenders (ALLIED), addresses the security risks faced by grassroots environmental defenders (GEDs). These defenders often face criminalization, physical attacks, and murder, particularly in regions dependent on natural resource extraction. STAND implements a strategy based on co-created training in advocacy and legal accountability, the Defender Small Grant Fund (DSGF) for evidence-based advocacy, and collaborative partnerships to strengthen solidarity networks. The initiative focuses its efforts on Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and Liberia.

• Grassroots environmental defenders (GEDs) face severe security threats, including criminalization, loss of property and livelihoods, physical attacks, and murder, especially in countries focused on large-scale infrastructure or natural resource extraction.
• Attacks on environmental defenders are frequently driven by corruption, inadequate enforcement of environmental protection laws, and a lack of recognition of their roles by the private sector and states.
• The STAND initiative employs a three-pronged strategy to support defenders: providing capacity building and training in advocacy and legal accountability, offering small grants through the Defender Small Grant Fund (DSGF), and establishing collaborative partnerships to increase participation in environmental governance.
