Locally Led Adaptation

This fact sheet summarizes the importance of locally led adaptation as highlighted in the IPCC WGII Climate Change 2022 Report, emphasizing the role of local and Indigenous knowledge, inclusive governance, and the need for equitable resource allocation to enhance climate resilience.

• Local communities are uniquely positioned to identify necessary climate solutions and prioritize climate-related risks. Adaptation initiatives that utilize knowledge coproduction to identify locally relevant stressors and risks are potentially more effective and acceptable.
• Indigenous and local knowledge systems are essential complements to scientific research, offering place-based experiences that shape the understanding of climate risk and the development of successful adaptation solutions.
• Climate resilient development is improved through integrated decision-making and the agency of local stakeholders. Adaptation actions are more effective when implemented in partnership with local communities, and those based on Indigenous practices are more sustainable and legitimate.
• Marginalized groups, including low-income households, ethnic minorities, and Indigenous people, face disproportionate vulnerability to climate change. Locally led adaptation is essential to boost resilience for these groups by ensuring agency and equitable access to resources.
• While at least 170 countries and numerous cities have integrated adaptation into policies and planning, there is a need to ensure these policies support locally led adaptation and address social inequities through funding and resources.
• The Adaptation Action Coalition (AAC) is a state-led group of 40 member countries working to achieve a climate-resilient world by 2030.
