- Regarding methane, the two countries face different primary emission sources: China's anthropogenic methane emissions are 36% from coal and 6% from oil and gas, whereas the US emissions are 6% from coal and 42% from oil and gas. China's 2018 inventory recorded 64 million tons of methane, with over 90% of energy-related emissions coming from coal mining. The US has implemented new EPA rules to phase out routine flaring at new oil wells and monitor leaks.
- In the field of CCUS, China is noted for its speed and scale in integrating projects with coal-fired power plants, with nearly 200 projects currently in place. The US possesses a more mature CO2 pipeline infrastructure and has allocated $12 billion for carbon management investments via the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Both nations view CCUS cooperation as a key element of the 'Sunnylands Statement'.
