The Restoration Diagnostic Can Help Bring Commitments into Action on the Ground
Summary
This briefing describes the Restoration Diagnostic, a structured method developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) to identify key success factors (KSFs) necessary for the effective implementation of forest landscape restoration (FLR) projects.
Key insights
- The World Resources Institute developed the Restoration Diagnostic as a structured method to identify which key success factors (KSFs) for restoration are already present, partially present, or missing in a specific country or landscape. It is designed to be used before restoration efforts to focus resources on critical factors, or periodically during implementation to facilitate adaptive management.
- Forest landscape restoration is defined as a long-term process aimed at regaining ecological functionality and improving human well-being in deforested or degraded forest landscapes. This process involves increasing the health or number of trees across entire watersheds, jurisdictions, or countries to provide benefits such as biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation, food security, and improved soil fertility.
- Analysis of 16 global case studies across five continents revealed three essential themes for successful restoration: clear motivation among decision-makers and citizens; the presence of enabling ecological, market, policy, social, or institutional conditions; and the mobilization of capacity and resources for sustained implementation.
- Global commitments to restore degraded land have increased significantly following COP21 in Paris. In Africa, 13 countries have committed 41 million hectares through AFR100 toward a 2030 goal of 100 million hectares. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Initiative 20x20 has seen commitments of nearly 28 million hectares since December 2014.
