Keeping Forest as Forest

This issue brief introduces a series on incentives, markets, and practices designed to promote the conservation and sustainable management of forests in the southern United States to preserve ecosystem services against various drivers of change.

• Forests in the southern United States provide essential ecosystem services, including timber production, water purification, soil erosion control, carbon sequestration for climate regulation, and opportunities for fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation.
• The quantity and quality of southern forests are threatened by several direct drivers of change, specifically suburban encroachment, wildfire, invasive species, pest and pathogen outbreaks, surface mining, climate change, and unsustainable forest management practices.
• To address drivers of change and promote sustainable management, the document identifies five categories of measures: market incentives, fiscal incentives, land use instruments, liability limitations, and education/capacity building.
