Green New Deal Rekindles Climate Conversation in the U.S.

A statement from Dan Lashof, Director of WRI US, regarding the introduction of the Green New Deal resolution by Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey.

• On February 7, 2019, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey introduced a joint resolution known as the Green New Deal, which aims to address economic inequality and counter climate change. The resolution was supported by at least 64 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 9 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate.
• Dan Lashof of WRI US asserts that the Green New Deal has restarted a necessary dialogue on climate action in the United States. He argues that effective climate legislation must combine ambitious action with the creation of good jobs and the reduction of economic inequality, while facilitating a rapid transition to clean energy and a decarbonized economy.
