With Help from WRI Tool, Caribbean Country Establishes First National Park

The government of St. Maarten established the Man of War Shoal Marine Park, protecting 1,500 hectares of coral reefs and sea grasses, after the St. Maarten Nature Foundation used a WRI tool to demonstrate that these ecosystems contribute US$58 million annually to the economy through tourism and fisheries.

• The establishment of the Man of War Shoal Marine Park protects 1,500 hectares of coral reefs and sea grasses, which are critical to St. Maarten's economy. Reef-related tourism attracts 2 million annual visitors and supports employment for 75 percent of the population, while fisheries provide US$2 million per year in value.
• The St. Maarten Nature Foundation used a WRI methodology to provide the economic evidence necessary for political support, calculating that marine ecosystems contribute US$58 million annually to the national economy via fisheries and tourism.
• WRI's Coastal Capital project provided the Excel-based tools used in St. Maarten and has conducted similar economic valuations of mangroves and coral reefs in four other Caribbean nations: Belize, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
