Southeast Freshwater Withdrawals, By Use Category, 2000

This fact sheet from the World Resources Institute, based on 2000 U.S. Geological Survey data, details the volume of freshwater withdrawn and consumed by thermoelectric power plants in the Southeast United States.

• In 2000, thermoelectric power plants in the Southeast withdrew nearly 40 billion gallons of freshwater daily, which accounted for approximately 65 percent of all withdrawals in the region. This daily volume is nearly equivalent to the total daily freshwater withdrawals for public supply in the entire United States.
• Thermoelectric power plants in the Southeast utilize water for cooling purposes for plants using biomass, nuclear, gas, oil, or coal fuels. Annual evaporation losses result in the consumption of nearly 140 billion gallons of water, a volume equal to the annual water use of over 1 million homes.
