Indonesia’s Indigenous People Secure Forest and Land Rights

WRI Indonesia collaborated with local partners and government bodies to map 300,000 hectares of customary forests in Papua, resulting in the issuance of six customary forest certificates in Jayapura Regency to protect Indigenous land rights and biodiversity.

• WRI Indonesia facilitated the participatory mapping of Indigenous territories in Papua to secure land tenure, which helped protect 300,000 hectares of customary forests.
• In Jayapura, WRI produced spatial data for 92 Indigenous territories, and similar spatial analysis was conducted along the west coast of the Sarmi Regency.
• The efforts led to the Papua Ministry of Environment and Forestry awarding six customary forest certificates in Jayapura Regency, providing formal recognition of ancestral land rights and protecting forests from development.
