Indonesia’s Indigenous People Secure Forest and Land Rights
Summary
WRI Indonesia facilitated the mapping of 300,000 hectares of customary forests across 92 Indigenous territories in Jayapura Regency and conducted spatial analysis in Sarmi Regency. By collaborating with the Indigenous Peoples Task Force (GTMA) and government agencies, WRI helped secure six customary forest certificates from Papua’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, providing formal land rights to Indigenous communities and protecting the region's intact rainforests from development.
Key insights
- WRI Indonesia, in collaboration with local organizations, universities, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and indigenous institutions, supported the GugusTugas Masyarakat Adat (GTMA)—a task force created by the Jayapura Regency regional government—to establish a roadmap and guidelines for recognizing Indigenous Peoples' land rights.
- WRI generated spatial data for 92 Indigenous territories in Jayapura, covering 300,000 hectares of customary forests, and performed similar spatial analysis on the west coast of the Sarmi Regency. This data was shared with the Provincial Forestry and Environmental Agency of Papua to map territories for the Isirawa ethnic group in Sarmi Regency and the Yongsu Desoyo community in Jayapura Regency.
- The efforts led to the Papua Ministry of Environment and Forestry awarding six customary forest certificates in Jayapura Regency, which provide formal recognition of ancestral land rights and protect these forests from development.
