Evaluating the Financial Future of Electric Utilities Using Scenarios Analysis: The Case of Tamil Nadu

This research paper examines the financial health of Tamil Nadu's state-owned electric utility, TANGEDCO, using the Revenue and Tariff Analysis for Electric Utilities (RATE) model to analyze the impacts of various demand-supply and energy balance scenarios.

This debt level is negatively affecting the utility's ability to borrow loans, which subsequently hinders payments to renewable energy generators and upgrades to grid infrastructure.
• Tamil Nadu possesses approximately 10% of India's installed electricity generation capacity, with 20.1 GW currently derived from renewable energy sources including biomass, hydro, solar, and wind. The state aims to increase generation capacity by 33 GW by 2030, with over 80% of that new capacity expected to be renewable energy to meet a goal of generating half its power from RE sources by 2030.
