Research, Technology and Policy Combine to Protect Madagascar’s Forests

The World Resources Institute (WRI) supported forest conservation in Madagascar through the deployment of the Forest Watcher app and research leading to the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Andrefana Dry Forests. The app enabled park rangers to respond to satellite-based alerts, contributing to a significant reduction in fire points in Kirindy Mité National Park. Additionally, WRI's data analysis and nomination dossier led to the official UNESCO designation of the Andrefana Dry Forests in September 2023.

• The implementation of the Global Forest Watch Forest Watcher app expanded from three pilot sites to 24 areas managed by Madagascar National Parks, allowing rangers to use satellite-based alerts to intervene in deforestation and fires. In Kirindy Mité National Park, the number of fire points decreased from 33 in 2020 to 3 in 2022 due to the app's use.
• WRI's research on the biogeography and vulnerability of the Andrefana Dry Forests, including data analysis and the writing of a nomination dossier, resulted in UNESCO officially designating the area as a legally protected World Heritage Site in September 2023.
• The conservation project actively involved women from local communities in forest patrolling, which served to break down traditional gender barriers.
