Honoring Rafe Pomerance, a Pioneer of Climate Action

A statement from the World Resources Institute honoring the life and career of Rafe Pomerance, a climate action pioneer who influenced policy and public awareness over five decades.

• Rafe Pomerance contributed to several landmark climate milestones, including the organization of the 1986 U.S. Senate hearings on the greenhouse effect and serving as a key architect for the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which was the first major global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
• Pomerance worked with numerous organizations over his career, including the World Resources Institute (where he was a colleague from 1986-1993), Friends of the Earth, the Woodwell Climate Research Center, the Polar Research Board, Arctic 21, American Rivers, and the U.S. government.
