NGOs Support New Geothermal Sustainable Development Pact

A joint statement from eight non-governmental organizations expressing support for the Geothermal Sustainable Development Pact and its associated Principles for Responsible Geothermal Development to guide the deployment of next-generation geothermal technologies.

• Eight NGOs, including the Environmental Defense Fund and The Nature Conservancy, support the Geothermal Sustainable Development Pact and the Principles for Responsible Geothermal Development as a first step toward identifying best practices for next-generation geothermal resources.
• The principles within the pact establish parameters for responsible development, specifically focusing on community engagement, labor practices, the protection of water, cultural resources, and sensitive areas, as well as the use of near-zero emissions electricity generation and induced seismicity mitigation.
• The pact includes provisions to address public data gaps to improve project planning and policymaking, specifically requiring the public disclosure of water intensity data and chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing fluids, and adopting the induced seismicity protocol from the U.S. Department of Energy.
