10 Questions to Ask About Scaling On-Grid Renewable Energy

This working paper, co-written by the World Resources Institute's Electricity Governance Initiative and Prayas Energy Group, introduces a framework designed to help electricity sector stakeholders address the economic and technological complexities of scaling on-grid renewable energy at a national level.

• By the end of 2012, 138 countries had implemented renewable energy targets, with new capacity investments reaching US$244 billion that year and global installed renewable power capacity exceeding 480 gigawatts (GW).
• Scaling renewable energy on an economy-wide basis involves overcoming economic challenges regarding the distribution of costs among taxpayers, investors, electricity consumers, and other stakeholders, as well as technological hurdles including knowledge gaps, the need for transmission and distribution grid upgrades, and the management of intermittent supply.
