Technical Note For the India Water Tool

The India Water Tool 2.0 (IWT) is a high-resolution, public platform developed by a Working Group of 14 members—including companies like Nestle and PepsiCo and partners such as the World Resources Institute—to address water security challenges in India. The tool integrates 14 datasets from Indian government authorities, including the Central Ground Water Board and the India Meteorological Department, to help users identify water risks and prioritize management actions. Additionally, the IWT 2.0 enables the calculation of metrics for reporting to corporate disclosure initiatives such as the CDP Water and the Global Reporting Initiative.

• The India Water Tool 2.0 (IWT) was developed by a 14-member Working Group coordinated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), comprising ten companies (ACC, Aditya Birla Group, Ambuja, BASF, ITC, Jain Irrigation, Mahindra, Monsanto, Nestle, and PepsiCo) and three knowledge partners: the World Resources Institute (WRI), Confederation of Indian Industry-Triveni Water Institute (CII-TWI), and Skoll Global Threats Fund.
• The IWT 2.0 integrates 14 datasets, utilizing data from Indian government bodies including the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), alongside water stress models.
• The tool provides metrics that support reporting for four corporate disclosure initiatives: the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines, the UN CEO Water Mandate Corporate Water Disclosure Guidelines, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water, and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
