Decarbonizing India’s Road Freight: Toward A Cleaner, Greener, and Electric Future for Commercial Vehicles

This research paper summarizes insights from a series of deep-dive sessions hosted by WRI India in Bengaluru, involving over 20 stakeholders from the commercial electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, including manufacturers, logistics operators, and financing experts. The document outlines recommendations for accelerating the transition to electric road freight in India to combat emissions driven by urbanization and e-commerce.

• Stakeholders identified several critical requirements to accelerate the decarbonization of road freight in India, including the need for policy and regulatory support, the development of new technologies and standardized processes, and the creation of mutual collaborations among stakeholders.
• To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) among manufacturers and businesses, the paper recommends implementing production-linked subsidies to reduce costs and developing financing structures and business models that allow smaller lenders to enter the fleet electrification market.
• India is considered well-positioned to lead commercial vehicle electrification due to its significant freight movement corridors and evolving domestic ecosystem, though policy support is required. This transition is urgent as emissions from urbanization and e-commerce activity constitute the majority of India's total transport emissions.
