1.5 Million People in 3 Brazilian Cities Gain Access to Quality Transport

EMBARQ Brasil provided technical assistance to Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasilia to implement bus rapid transit (BRT) systems. By 2014, 154 kilometers of corridors were launched, reducing commute times by 50% for 1.5 million people. An additional 211 kilometers of BRT are currently being planned or implemented in these cities.

• Between 2010 and 2014, EMBARQ Brasil provided technical assistance to the transportation agencies of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasilia to design and implement bus rapid transit (BRT) systems. This resulted in the 2014 launch of 154 kilometers of high-quality BRT corridors, which reduced commute times by 50 percent for 1.5 million people.
• The BRT implementation process involved convening bus companies, operators, agency officials, and stakeholders to plan and invest in networks, as well as hosting workshops for implementation teams to learn from experts. EMBARQ Brasil provided technical expertise for system design, focusing on speed, efficiency, safety, accessibility, and low emissions, and subsequently trained system operators.
• Following the initial success, the governments of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasilia are expanding their networks, with 211 kilometers of additional BRT currently in the planning and early implementation stages.
