Government of Mexico Introduces Latin America’s First-Ever Fuel-Efficiency Standard for Light Duty Vehicles

• In June 2013, Mexico implemented the first fuel-efficiency standard for light vehicles in Latin America. The standard was developed with significant support from EMBARQ Mexico and Centro Mario Molina, who provided a draft regulation and technical support to the National Environmental Ministry (SEMARNAT) after initial negotiations with the car industry had failed.
• The fuel-efficiency standard requires a new vehicle fleet average of 14.9 kilometers per liter of gas (35 miles per gallon) by 2016. This measure is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 170 megatons and provide consumers with fuel savings of $2,700 USD over the lifetime of a regulated vehicle.
• Mexico's standard is harmonized with regulations in the United States and Canada. This alignment may increase the global competitiveness of the Mexican car industry, which exports 81 percent of its vehicles to the global market.
