Election of New UK Government Heralds Major Opportunities for Ambitious Action and Leadership on Climate, Development and Nature

The World Resources Institute calls on the new UK government to accelerate national climate policies, rebuild trust with the Global South through increased climate finance, and lead international efforts on biodiversity and energy transitions.

• The new UK government is urged to prioritize the implementation of national climate policies concerning net zero, clean energy, land use, and nature, and to release an ambitious national climate plan (NDC) later in 2024 that incorporates the latest Climate Change Committee findings.
• To rebuild trust with the Global South, the UK should increase climate and development finance for the poorest nations by recommitting to the International Climate Fund, increasing contributions in line with Official Development Assistance, and contributing to the Loss and Damage Fund and the World Bank’s International Development Association replenishment.
• The UK is encouraged to advocate for an ambitious climate finance target at COP29 in Baku and to help broker a financing package for climate-resilient development that includes International Financial Institution reform, South-South finance, international taxes, a high-integrity carbon market, and debt relief.
• The UK should exercise international leadership across several sectors, including energy, cities, food, land use, the ocean, and nature, utilizing upcoming G20 meetings in Brazil and UN meetings in Colombia and Azerbaijan to signal its commitment.
