Map of SBSTA Submissions

This working paper by ClientEarth and the World Resources Institute (WRI) summarizes 26 submissions (14 from Parties, 12 from Observers) provided to the UNFCCC's SBSTA. These submissions offer input on the design and implementation of a "safeguard information system" (SIS) for REDD+, as requested by COP 16 to ensure the safeguards of the Cancun Agreements are respected.

• The UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technical Advice (SBSTA) was tasked by the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) in December 2010 to create guidance for a "safeguard information system" (SIS) by COP 17 in Durban in December 2011. This system is intended to provide information on how safeguards in Annex 1 of the Cancun Agreements are being addressed and respected while maintaining sovereignty.
• SBSTA received a total of 26 submissions regarding the SIS guidance, consisting of 14 from Parties and 12 from Observers. To organize these submissions, ClientEarth and the World Resources Institute (WRI) categorized the information into four areas: the role of the SIS, the type of information Parties should provide, methods for collecting and providing information, and other elements of the international safeguard system.
