Corporate GPM Guide 5

Corporate GPM Guide 5 introduces Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) as a tool for companies to reduce their environmental impact by purchasing the environmental attributes of renewable electricity independently of their power supply. The guide provides definitions, business benefits, purchasing strategies, and policy recommendations to accelerate REC market development as part of a broader series by the World Resources Institute.

• Renewable energy certificates (RECs) are products that allow companies to reduce the environmental impact of their business activities by purchasing the environmental attributes, such as avoided CO2 emissions, generated by renewable electricity production. Because RECs can be sold separately from the actual electricity, they allow customers to acquire these attributes independently of their retail power supply to "green" their electricity consumption.
• The Corporate GPM Guide 5 provides an introduction to RECs for corporate energy users, covering their definitions, business benefits, and similarities to other renewable energy products. It also outlines advantages of RECs over green power, shares purchasing strategies based on experiences from other companies and Green Power Market Development Group partners, and offers recommendations for policymakers and market participants to accelerate REC market development.
• The Corporate Guide to Green Power Markets is a series published by the World Resources Institute starting in July 2002, intended to help corporations evaluate renewable energy opportunities. The series, based on WRI's experience with the Green Power Market Development Group, was planned for publication approximately every quarter over 18 months and covers topics including the business case for green power, technologies like biomass, landfill gas, and wind, procurement strategies, and policies to address market obstacles.
