Indian Cities Pioneer Nature-based Solutions and Inspire National Climate Action

WRI implemented over 30 nature-based projects in Mumbai, Kochi, and Jaipur, including urban farming and water restoration, to mitigate climate risks. These initiatives, which include a food security project for 72,000 students in Mumbai and a cooling farm in Jaipur, led to the establishment of India's first national forum on urban nature-based solutions.

• The World Resources Institute (WRI) collaborated with local governments and community organizations to implement over 30 nature-based projects in the cities of Mumbai, Kochi, and Jaipur over a three-year period. These projects included wastewater treatment, stream rejuvenation, tree planting, water-body restoration, and urban and rooftop farming.
• Specific project outcomes include an urban farm at Jaipur Central Jail that provides organic produce to over 1,000 inmates and officials while cooling the property, and a school-based urban gardening project in Mumbai. The Mumbai project is scaling to 250 public schools and is expected to improve food security for approximately 72,000 students.
• The results from these city-level projects led to the creation of India's first national-level forum on urban nature-based solutions. This forum brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government agencies, policy makers, private investors, and academia, to share best practices and experiences.
