Indian Cities Pioneer Nature-based Solutions and Inspire National Climate Action

WRI implemented over 30 nature-based projects in Mumbai, Kochi, and Jaipur, including urban farming and water-body restoration, to combat climate risks like urban flooding and extreme heat. These initiatives, which included a school-based gardening project in Mumbai scaling to 250 schools and an urban farm at Jaipur Central Jail, led to the establishment of India's first national-level forum on urban nature-based solutions to share best practices and scale these approaches across Indian cities.

• WRI implemented more than 30 nature-based projects in Mumbai, Jaipur, and Kochi over three years, utilizing spatial assessments to identify vulnerable locations. Projects included tree planting, wastewater treatment, stream rejuvenation, water-body restoration, and urban and rooftop farming.
• Specific project outcomes include an urban farm at Jaipur Central Jail that provides organic produce to over 1,000 inmates and officials, and a Mumbai school gardening project scaling to 250 public schools to improve food security for approximately 72,000 students.
• The results from these city-level projects led to the creation of India's first national-level forum on urban nature-based solutions, where diverse stakeholders including government agencies, private investors, and academia share best practices to scale these solutions.
