Celebrating the Growth of Environmental Enterprise in Emerging Markets

This case study describes the impact of the World Resources Institute's (WRI) New Ventures project, highlighting the Brazilian company Ouro Verde as an example of a sustainable enterprise that provides economic value to the Amazon rainforest through the sale of Brazil nut products.

• The company Ouro Verde produces sustainable Brazil nut products, such as granulate, nut butter, and extra virgin nut oil, which creates economic value for local communities in the Amazon. The company has created 47 jobs and its supplier partners sustainably manage approximately 1.3 million hectares of rainforest.
• Founded in 1999, WRI's New Ventures project provides mentoring and investment access to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in six emerging markets: Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. The project has worked with 346 innovative enterprises and facilitated over $225 million in investment.
• In 2010, SMEs supported by the New Ventures project achieved specific environmental impacts, including the reduction of 135,021 tons of CO2 and the conservation or sustainable management of 1,490,448 hectares of land.
