Potential Impact of Corporate Climate Action in India

This working paper by the World Resources Institute estimates the collective impact of voluntary climate commitments made by 50 large Indian companies on national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

• An analysis of 50 Indian companies, which account for approximately 35 percent of the industrial sector's emissions in India, indicates that their voluntary climate commitments could reduce their GHG emissions by 5.76 percent in 2020 and 13.04 percent in 2030 compared to a Reference Scenario.
• The voluntary climate commitments of these 50 companies are estimated to reduce India's total aggregate GHG emissions in 2030 by between 1.74 and 1.95 percent, exceeding national emissions projections that already account for current climate policies.
• More than 90 percent of the total emissions reductions are driven by heavy industries, specifically Cement, Pulp & Paper, and Metals, even though these sectors have less ambitious average emissions reduction targets than other sectors.
