Potential Impact of Corporate Climate Action in India

The paper analyzes 50 Indian companies accounting for 35% of industrial emissions, finding that their voluntary commitments could reduce their own emissions by 13.04% by 2030 and lower India's aggregate GHG emissions by 1.74% to 1.95% by 2030 compared to national projections. Heavy industries, specifically Metals, Pulp & Paper, and Cement, are responsible for over 90% of these reductions.

• Fifty Indian companies, which account for approximately 35 percent of the industrial sector's emissions in India, are projected to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 5.76 percent in 2020 and 13.04 percent in 2030 through voluntary commitments compared to a Reference Scenario.
• The voluntary climate commitments of these 50 companies could result in a reduction of India's total greenhouse gas emissions by between 1.74 and 1.95 percent by 2030, exceeding projections based on existing national climate policies.
• More than 90 percent of the total emissions reductions are driven by heavy industries, specifically the Cement, Pulp & Paper, and Metals sectors, even though these sectors have less ambitious average reduction targets than other sectors.
