Assessing Supply Chain Barriers to and Opportunities for Advancing Road Transport Electrification in Kenya

This research paper analyzes the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Kenya, identifying barriers to adoption and comparing national efforts with international strategies to accelerate road transport electrification.

• Kenya's transport sector is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country, representing 13 percent of total emissions. Despite over 75 percent of the population having access to clean energy, electric vehicles account for less than 1 percent of annual vehicle sales.
• To increase the adoption of electric vehicles, the Kenyan government must implement a multifaceted approach including stronger policy and regulatory interventions, better access to financing, technology, and infrastructure, improved commercial environments, increased awareness, and technical capacity building. These interventions should be based on data and targeted modelling to evaluate costs, business value, and pilot programs.
