Implementation Strategies for Renewable Energy Services in Low-Income, Rural Areas

This briefing, based on a March 2012 workshop by the World Resources Institute and the DOEN Foundation, identifies four core business strategies used by 25 socially oriented energy enterprises to deliver renewable energy to low-income, rural communities in developing countries.

• Socially oriented energy enterprises delivering renewable energy to low-income rural areas utilize four common core business strategies: understanding consumer needs, preferences, and payment capacity; demonstrating the value of new technologies or delivery models; establishing consumer trust in products and supply chains; and creating financing and payment schemes aligned with consumer budgets.
• The strategies and business models discussed are designed to combine entrepreneurship with social and environmental objectives to provide clean, affordable, and scalable energy to populations underserved by traditional providers, benefiting millions of people across 11 countries.
