Emissions and Environmental Surveys With Faith Actors: A Pilot Project With the Episcopal Church in the Philippines

This working paper details a pilot project to develop and implement a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions survey tool for the Episcopal Church in the Philippines (ECP), providing a model and guide for other faith actors to measure and reduce their environmental impact.

• The pilot survey calculated GHG emissions across four sectors—energy, water, waste, and refrigerants—for five types of assets, including churches, schools, and buildings. On a per-individual-asset basis, schools produced the highest emissions at 153.78t, while churches produced the lowest at 6.31t. Refrigerants were the primary emission source for schools, whereas energy consumption accounted for nearly all emissions for churches.
• A majority of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines (ECP) assets already employ emission reduction and mitigation strategies, specifically reducing electricity consumption, harvesting rain water, tree-planting, and raising environmental awareness.
• The ECP intends to integrate emissions reporting into its annual parochial reports by rerunning the survey every year. The project aims to enable faith actors to establish and track annual emission reduction targets to evidence their contribution to climate action.
• For other faith actors wishing to adapt this survey model, the paper recommends conducting training for nominated survey coordinators, establishing an inventory of assets, ensuring adequate resources are available, and initiating early internal communications to explain the tool.
