Unpacking Green Targets: A Framework for Interpreting Private Sector Banks’ Sustainable Finance Commitments

This technical note from the World Resources Institute introduces a framework designed to help interpret and compare the sustainable finance commitments made by private sector banks, focusing on commitment design, accountability, transparency, and portfolio context.

• Private sector banks are using sustainable finance commitments—defined as publicly-made, time-bound pledges to provide or facilitate capital for sustainability and climate solutions—to respond to societal, market, and political pressures to fund low carbon development. However, these commitments are difficult to compare because they vary significantly in structure and offer a limited view of a bank's overall sustainability strategy.
• The World Resources Institute has developed a framework to improve the understanding of these commitments by analyzing information published by the banks. This framework evaluates the context of the bank's portfolio alongside the transparency, accountability, and design of the commitment to allow for comparisons between different institutions.
