Apparel and Footwear Sector Science-Based Targets Guidance

The World Resources Institute provides guidance for companies in the apparel and footwear sector—including retailers, brands, manufacturers, and mills—to set and achieve science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement.

• Companies in the apparel and footwear sector are encouraged to implement a three-part strategy to address significant and growing greenhouse gas emissions: 'Count it' by completing a GHG inventory (including scope 3) using supplier-specific and secondary data; 'Change it' by setting ambitious targets via Science Based Targets initiative methods, deploying energy efficiency and renewable energy, substituting materials, and exploring new business models; and 'Scale it' through collaboration and open-source tools.
• Scope 3 emissions along the value chain are significant for brands and retailers, and these companies encounter various obstacles when attempting to address them.
