2014: A Year of Temperature Records and Landmark Climate Findings

• The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that 2014 was the hottest year on record globally, continuing a trend where the mean global temperature has exceeded the twentieth century average for 38 consecutive years.
• Global temperature trends in 2014 included record-high seasonal temperatures for summer and fall, and the second-warmest spring. Furthermore, monthly global temperatures have remained above average since December 1984.
• Scientific consensus attributes warming over the last 50 years primarily to manmade climate change, with expectations that temperatures will continue to rise for the rest of the century due to human-driven greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Delaying the reduction of these emissions increases the risk of the most disastrous climate impacts.
• Climate change impacts are described as widespread and consequential globally, with a trend of increasing extreme weather events. Seven of the ten most expensive years for weather and climate disasters have occurred since 2000.
