Building an Inclusive Green Economy for All

This joint agency paper by the Poverty-Environment Partnership (PEP) argues for the creation of an inclusive green economy to address poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. Using case studies from developing countries, it advocates for strategic investments in growth industries and ecosystem services to achieve a 'triple bottom line' of economic growth, environmental protection, and social inclusion.

• Despite the movement of nearly 650 million people out of extreme poverty in developing countries between 1990 and 2008, approximately 1.3 billion people continue to live on less than US$1.25 per day, while global inequality has increased.
• The ability to overcome poverty and inequality is being hindered by the interlinked crises of economic disruption, climate change, and ecosystem degradation, which primarily affect the most vulnerable populations.
• Realizing an inclusive green economy requires governance and policy reforms that grant poor people secure rights over environmental assets and a voice in their management, while avoiding harmful measures like aid conditionality and green protectionism.
